Facilities Outside Town Boundary

The Weipa residents access the following facilities that are outside the Town Boundary and on Rio Tinto mining lease: the lakes recreational area, a pony club, bow hunters club, rifle range, pistol range and speedway circuit. In addition the Town Rubbish Tip is also located outside the Town boundary.

Wharfs - There are two wharfs located outside the Weipa Town area and they are the Lorim Point (Ship Loader) and Humbug wharfs. As you would expect the Lorim Point wharf is closed to public access for the loading of bauxite. The Humbug wharf, however, is operated by Gulf Freight Services and supports the mining operations and the Town with supplies.

RAAF Base Scherger - Some 30 kilometres east of Weipa is RAAF Base Scherger on 13, 410 Hectares land. The land is a combination of Rio Tinto Mining Lease, Crown Land and Traditional Land. With a manning of only 4 staff, RAAF Base Scherger is considered a "Bare Base" (part of the frontline defence strategy that can be activated in times of need).

Bureau Of Meteorology (BOM) - The BOM has two permanent staff and their primary function is to monitor weather conditions for general aviation.
