RESTRICTED DOGS Are you the owner or keeper of a breed or crossbreed of the following dogs?
If you are then after June 1st 2002 you can keep these breeds of dogs only if you comply with the new legislation on Regulation of Restricted Dogs under Chapter 17A of the Local Government Act and the Local Government Regulation 1994.
The purposes to be achieved are:
a) Providing for Local Governments to declare dogs to be restricted dogs. b) Prohibiting the acquisition, breeding and supply of restricted dogs. c) Providing for the compulsory de-sexing of restricted dogs d) Providing for permits for and for the identification of restricted dogs. e) Imposing conditions on keeping and requirements for the control of restricted dogs. f) Allowing authorised persons to seize and destroy restricted dogs in particular circumstances. g) Provide for Local governments to administer and be responsible for the matters mentioned in paragraph (a) to (f).

THE FACTS

- A person can not acquire a restricted dog. Max penalty $9,000

- A person must not supply a restricted dog. Max penalty $9,000
|

- A person must not allow a restricted dog to breed. Max penalty $9,000
|
|
- A person must not encourage a restricted dog to breed. Max penalty $9,000
|
|
- A person must have a permit for a restricted dog. Max penalty $4,500
|
|
- A person must have a restricted dog desexed before it is 6 months old or 3 months from being issued a permit. Max penalty $9,000
|
|
- A person must not abandon a restricted dog. Max penalty $18,000
|
|
- A person must not allow a restricted dog to attack or put fear into another animal or person. Max penalty $18,000
|
|
- A restricted dog must not be in public place unless it is muzzled and under effective control. Max penalty $4,500
|
|
- A restricted dog in a vehicle must be enclosed or restrained so it can not reach past the inside of the vehicle body. Max penalty $4,500
|
|
- Failure to comply with a compliance notice. Max penalty $4,500
|
|
- A person must ensure each permit condition is complied with for the dog. Max penalty $4,500
|
|
- A person must notify local authority in writing of any change of address within 7 days. Max penalty $4,500
|
|
- A person must have a enclosure to meet the requirements. Max penalty $4,500
