Cyclone Watch

A cyclone watch is issued if a cyclone is likely to affect coastal or island communities within 48 hours. The Cyclone Watch will tell you where the cyclone is, what it's movements are, how strong it is and will identify the areas that could be affected by it. A Cyclone Watch is updated 6 hourly, a Warning Phase is updated 3 hourly, a Serious Threat is updated hourly and Flash Cyclone Advice is issued immediately.

Cyclone Plotting Map

If a Cyclone Watch is current it is time to think about the following-

- Securing loose items and outdoor furniture. The simplest household tool can cause serious damage if blown about in high winds.

- Windows and doors: board up any exposed windows or tape across the glass with masking tape and secure all doors.

- Make sure your vehicle is full of fuel in case an evacuation is necessary and secure it undercover.

- Caravans and Campers: Evacuate from caravans, campers and tents - find more substantial shelter.

- Evacuation Transport - If you so not have a vehicle, make evacuation arrangements with a neighbour or freind.

- Water: Fill drinking containers, your bathtub and wheelie bin with water. The water in the wheelie bin can be used to flush toilets if water supplies are affected and will help to secure the bin.

- Refrigeration: Freeze water for alternative refrigeration should there be a power failure. In the event of power loss, limit opening the fridge.

- Valuables: Place important documents, mementos and valuables in plastic bags or other waterproof containers and place in a secure location.

- Listen to the radio: Turn on your battery run radio, stay tuned and stay indoors.

- Boats: Fill tinneys with water (this will keep them secure) don't forget to put the bung in, and block up (blocks under the suspension)
