Travelling to Weipa

Road: Weipa is approximately 800kms from Cairns, accessed by the Peninsular Development Road (PDR). It is possible to drive to and from Weipa but it is advisable to check the condition of the road prior to travelling, especially during the wet season. Four-wheel-drive vehicles are recommended for travel outside the Weipa Township. It is also possible for you to barge your vehicle, by sea, from Karumba to Weipa while you seek other travel methods. |
Air: Most people travel to and from Weipa by air via a daily Qantaslink air service which connects with southern flights. The Weipa airport is located 15mins from the township. There are also several charter airlines which operate out of Weipa and are available for passenger and freight transport.

There is a branch of the Queensland Country Credit Union located in the shopping area in Weipa with ATM facilities at the entrance. The Weipa Post Office is an agent for the Commonwealth Bank and generic ATM machines are located in various pubs, clubs and service stations around town.

The majority of goods and services required can be provided within Weipa. For items readily available, there are various freighting systems that can assist you to obtain items from outside Weipa. During the wet season (December - March) it is wise to stock up on items such as long-life milk and canned/frozen fruit and vegetables, as fresh supplies may be limited. Bird Watching and Nature Walks: The Weipa Bicentennial Community Committee and volunteers, with the full support of the Napranum Council and Rio Tinto Alcan Ltd, have developed the Uningan Nature Reserve. The reserve covers an area of over 2,800 hectares and includes habitats such as open woodland, palm forests and mangroves.
9km of walking tracks have been marked and several footbridges constructed over creeks in the area. Data has been gathered on the flora, fauna and Aboriginal knowledge of the area. Features such as the large shell mounds (middens) and canoe trees have been signposted.
