As of July 1st all dogs and cats that are 12 weeks or older are due for registration for the 2011-12 financial year. The cost of registration is $32.00 for an entire animal and $16.00 for a de-sexed animal. Pet owners who pensioners receive free registration for their first dog/cat if it is de-sexed and full price for any other animals. All animals that are 6 months or younger receive free registration up to the 30th June 2012. Pet owners have until 31st August to have registrations finalized. Penalties will apply if animals not registered after this time. You can download and print the registration form here and bring it in to Weipa Town Authority.

The Queensland State government has implemented new laws for microchipping that came into force as of December 12, 2010. Weipa Town Authority is obligated to educate and enforce these new laws. All dogs and cats are required to be microchipped before the age of 12 weeks. Any dogs or cats sold or given away are also required to be microchipped. A person who sells or gives away a dog or cat that has not been microchipped may be quilty of an offence and may be penalized up to $2000.00. A person who obtains an animal that is not microchipped can also be penalized up to $2000.00. Microchipping is available at the vets or at the Weipa Town Authority. Weipa Town Authority charges $26.00 per microchip implanted.

A maximum of 2 dogs are allowed per house and 1 dog allowed per unit/flat. A permit may be granted for one additional dog per house or unit/flat (Body Corporate permission will be required if applicable). Additional dog applications can be downloaded by clicking here. Applications will need to be submitted to Weipa Town Office with the application fee of $25.60 an additional $51.30 will be payable on approval of the permit. Additional dog permits ($51.30) are renawable with registrations as of 1st July each year.
