Michael Rowland is the Elected Chairman and is responsible to lead the WTC (Weipa Town Committee) over the next four years.  He is responsible for ensuring that the WTC maintain close links with local community and regional groups: i.e Regional Organisation of Councils Cape York (ROCCY), Cape York Peninsula Development Association (CYPDA), Western Cape Regional Consultative Group (WCRCG), Western Cape Communities Co-Existence Agreement Co-Ordinating Committee, Weipa Town Traditional Owner Group (WTTOG), and the Western Cape College Management Board. Michael owns and operates Weipa Pest Control.

Michael and Yvonne moved to Weipa from Brisbane on the 25th January, 1988 to take up the post as Manager of Flick Pest Control's Weipa operations.  Michael had a natural love for Weipa from the time the plane touched down and Yvonne grew to love the Weipa some ten years down the track.  Michael was President of Weipa Community Care for several years before he become Chairman of the Weipa Town Committee and now is well into his fifth year of holding this post.  Michael enjoys his past and present position because, along with his current position of being the Director of Weipa Pest Control, he is constantly doing what he likes best that is always being a listening ear to the people of Weipa.  Michael's work also sees him driving many thousands of kilometers around The Cape each year, sometimes never seeing another vehicle for hours at a time.

Michael was born in Burnley Lancashire England and immigrated to Australia as a child as a 'ten pound pom' with his family.  They all settled in well at their new home in Brisbane with Michael finally taking the plunge and becoming an Aussie on 2nd of October, 1985, something he is very proud of, but he's never been able to quite loose the slight english accent and he doesn't like vegemite !!

Eight years ago Michael and Yvonne bought a piece of land in Weipa and designed their own home.  Michael took on the job of building the family home and with the dream alive in his head.  He,his wife and friend Rodney built every piece of the home and finally moved in seven months later.

Weipa has been good for Michael and his family.  They have had opportunities they would never have had if they had stayed in Brisbane.  He has met and remains friends with people from all over Australia and New Zealand, some going back to when he arrived in Weipa 17 years ago and this is a testimony to his ongoing commitment and caring for people and being a listening ear to the community of Weipa.
