Committee Meetings

Meetings of the Weipa Town Authority are held in the Council Chambers on the third Friday of each month commencing at 8.00 am. This meeting is open to the public. Any variation to meeting times and dates will be advertised in the Weipa Bulletin. Correspondence for this meeting closes on Wednesday of the week prior to the meeting, to allow Council officers sufficient time to prepare reports.

Membership is free for residents of Weipa Town. The library offers a wide range of fiction, non-fiction, reference, periodicals, children’s books, videos and photocopying is available at 40c per copy. Internet access is available $4.50 per ½ hour for non-members and $2.50 per ½ hour for members. The Cape York Collection is located in the library and contains history and reference materials relating to Weipa and surrounding areas on the Cape.

Swimming Pool

Weipa Town Swimming Pool will be closed til late March 2008 whilst redevelopment work is underway.  Please contact Weipa Town Authority for up to date details on planned reopening times.

Rate Information

Always check your Rate Notice for correct details. If unsure contact the Town Authority.

Discount: To qualify for 2.5% discount, rates (together with any arrears or interest) must be paid in full and received by Town Authority on or prior to the due date shown on the rates notice. The onus rests on the ratepayer to ensure that rates are received by the close of business on the due date in order to receive discount.

Interest: Compound interest at the rate of 11% per annum is charged on overdue rates and charges.

Rate Payments: Rates may be paid by the following methods:

·          Cheque/Money orders made payable to “Weipa Town Authority”

·          Credit Card in person or by phone. Credit card payments attract a extra charge of 1.5% of the total amount payable.

·          EFTPOS in person at the Weipa Town Authority

·          Direct Deposit/Online to the Weipa Town Authority Bank Account - BSB 704640 Acct No 450718.  Please ensure your payment reference number (found on the rates notice) and property owner’s name is entered into the reference field when paying online.

·          To assist ratepayers in budgeting for the payment of their rates, The Weipa Town Authority will accept prepayments or instalments in advance.  Please note that the account must be paid in full by the due date or interest will be payable.

Change of Address: It is the owner’s responsibility to advise the Weipa Town Authority in writing of a Notice of change of address. This will ensure correct service of rates and other notices.  If mail is returned unclaimed to this office, endeavours will be made to redirect notices however the onus is on the property owner to inform of change of address.

Calculation of Service Charges

·         Water: A single dwelling or single flat is charged at a rate of “5” units of water on a half yearly basis. This unit charge is not a usage charge, as the town does not yet have water meter usage policy.

·         Sewerage: A charge for pedestals located on your parcel of land. The 1st Pedestal rate for a single dwell/flat/unit is charged at the First Pedestal rate and any further pedestals are charged at a reduced rate.

·         Domestic Garbage: A charge for wheelie bin collection twice a week located on your property.
