Carrie has been a part of the Weipa Community for 20 years.  She has been interested in all facets of the town and when her children were small, served on various committees.  She thinks we have a great town and wants to help make it even better!!She is presently on the Weipa Community Care Committee, and is an elected member of the Weipa Town Committee.  Her brief on the community includes the Hospital, Reconciliation, Multi Purpose Facility, Environment and the Events Co-Ordinator.

Originally form New Zealand where she qualified as a teacher, Carrie met and married her husband Keith, a Canadian, and for the first six years they lived in Cananda.  They arrived in Australia in 1976 and after a few months in Cairns, moved to Thursday Island. As Carrie say "If you are going to live in Australia you might as well be somewhere warm!"

Carrie, with her husband and then three children first came to Weipa South (Now Napranum) in 1983 where her husband had a job with the Government.  Carrie worked as the teacher librarian at Weipa North and Jessica Point.  A few years later they moved to Weipa North when Keith got a job with Comalco.  Along the way they had two more children, proper Weipaites !! In 1991 Keith worked with contractor Peter Statton for ten years until being re-employed by Comalco in 2001.

On returning to work after maternity leave, Carrie worked as an english teacher then as the first music teacher Weipa had ever had.  She threw herself into Musicals, Choir, Rock Eisteddfod's and arranging concerts.  She presently works as the teacher/co-ordinator of RATEP (Remote Area Teacher Education Program) in Napranum, where Indigenous people can complete an Education degree without having their community.

Carrie has a Bachelor in Education from Simon Frazer University in Cananda, a Grad Dip in Career Education from RMIT, a Grad Dip in Teacher Librarianship from QUT and a Masters in Education from University of South Australia.
She laughed " One thing about isolated areas, it gives you time to study."

Carrie and her husband Keith, enjoy the life Weipa has to offer.  They are active members of Hash House Harriers, enjoy camping and socializing and have organized and participated in the Comedy Extravaganzas.  Carrie also enjoys reading, music, walking and aerobics.  They feel lucky to have second son John, with his wife Nyree and grand daughter, Danika, living around the corner.
