In March 2008 the 4-year term for the current Weipa Town Authority began.

The Weipa Town Authority Commitee is made up of seven members, four of which are elected by  Weipa residents registered  on the QLD electoral role. Two members are appointed representatives for Rio Tinto Alcan and one appointed representative for the Traditional Owners.

General meetings of the Weipa Town Authority are held in the Council Chambers on the  third Friday of each month commencing at 8.30am. The meetings are broken up into the following approximate time frames, Chairpersons report commencing at 8.30am, Administration and Finance Report commencing at approx 9.30am, Community and Social Report commencing at approx 10.30am, Works and Engineering commencing at approx 11.30am and Planning and Development Report commencing at approx 12.30pm. Meetings break for lunch at 12.00pm and all meetings are open to the public. Correspondence for General meetings closes on the Wednesday week prior to the meeting to allow council officers sufficient time to prepare reports. Agenda's are available for collection by the Weipa Town Authority members on the Friday Afternoon prior to the meeting. There is also time allocated at 3.00pm on the first Thursday of each month (when required) for special meetings, these meetings are for discussion of urgent items such as Town Planning.
